This Smash Burger is the recipe for you if you like a juicy, meaty burger with lots of crispy edges, and plenty of smoky crevices to sink your favorite cheese or sauce into! You'll have a greasy cooktop. Undoubtedly. Your smoke alarm will holler. Probably. Will it be worthwhile? Yes, a million times yes. Plus, for the price of one burger at a restaurant, you can get four. Budget-Friendly Burger Smash! Let's become best friends.
What exactly is a Smash Burger
A Smash Burger is a thin, round patty that has crispy, charred sides and a smoky taste. Smash burgers are made by slamming a hot, flat, ungreased surface with a ground beef ball.
The Best Smash Burger Ingredients
Smash Burgers can be made quickly (although they are a little messy), and are delicious. They're perfect for a get-together on the weekend. What you need to make Smash Burgers:
Don't use lean beef for the ground beef. Fat is necessary for a juicy and flavorful patty. Use 80/20 ground meat, which is beef that contains 80% of the meat and 20% of the fat. The same rule applies if you are using ground turkey or chicken to make your patties.
Butter By adding frozen butter to your beef mixture, you can get juicy results, with meaty, deep flavors, and crispy edges. Butter your buns to add more flavor and depth to your burger.
Seasoning We use our Homemade Cajun Seasoning but you can also add a teaspoon and quarter teaspoon of pepper to this burger. Try adding a teaspoon of your favorite spice blend like our Homemade Cajun Seasoning for a little extra kick.
Buns - A burger is nothing without a great bun. I like potato buns but white, pretzel or brioche buns work well too. Wrap your patty with a large, juicy lettuce!
Toppings I recommend American Cheese for a delicious cheeseburger. For our toppings we went with the classics: lettuce, tomato slices, red onions, and red onion. We avoided sauces because they would have overpowered the taste of our patty. But you do you. Slices of avocado, crispy bacon and a fried yolk are also great toppings. You can also top your patty off with smoky chipsotle peppers, onions and mushrooms.
Tips for a Great Smash Burger
- Chill your meat. Cold burgers contain solidified fat. This means that more fat is retained in the patty during cooking, resulting in a crispy exterior and a juicy interior.
- When you are ready to cook your burgers, salt them. Salt quickly denatures proteins in the ground beef, and the texture of the patty will change to a rubbery, dry meatloaf.
- Use a heavy bottomed pan made of cast iron or stainless steel that will retain heat even when you drop a cold patties on it. You should not use non-stick; non-stick can be heated to high temperatures.
- Use the largest, heaviest spatula that you can find to smash your burger. Place a thick, heavy, tall glass on top of the spatula to get more leverage. Then, put your hand on the bottom and smash it down.
- Use a meat temperature to ensure that your burgers have been cooked evenly. A cooked burger's internal temperature should be at least 160degF.
What to serve with Smash Burgers
Our Oven Baked Steak fries were perfect with our Smash Burgers. Try our crispy Garlic Parmesan Oven fries. Also, our Summer Vegetable Pasta Salad or Easy Creamy Coleslaw are great choices.
How to store Smash Burgers
Store cooked patties for up to four days in an airtight container. Reheat the patties on a hot pan. You will end up with rubbery burgers if you use a microwave. You can freeze the burgers without cooking the patties. Freeze the unseasoned, buttered portions in a container with an airtight lid. The day before you plan to cook them, take them out of your freezer and let them thaw overnight in the fridge.
Smash Burger
Equipment
-
Cast Iron Skillet
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef $6.99
- 4 Tbsp frozen salted butter, divided $0.56
- 3 tsp Homemade Burger Seasoning $0.33
- 4 burger buns $2.99
- 4 leaves iceberg lettuce $0.37
- 1 tomato sliced into thin round slices $0.45
- 14 small onion, thinly sliced $0.16
Instructions
-
Separate the beef into equal portions.
-
Each portion should be topped with 1/2 teaspoon of frozen butter. Wrap the meat around butter and form it into a round. The beef should be chilled until it is time to cook. Cast iron pans should be heated on high heat. Switch on the exhaust fan. Open a window.
-
Sprinkle a 1/4 teaspoon of burger spice over the beefball, and then place it into the skillet when the pan is hot.
-
Keep the spatula in place on the burger while it cooks. As soon as you notice the color change on the top (about 2 min), gently work the spatula underneath the patty. This step is important, because the patty may stick to the pan.
-
Flip the patty and smash it once more. Remove the patty and let it cool on a cooling rack. Cook the patty for another 2 minutes. Then, wipe the pan with a paper-towel and cook the rest of the patties.
-
Place a rack on the top third of the oven while the patties are resting. Turn the broiler to high. Melt the 2 teaspoons of butter remaining and brush the melted butter onto the buns. Place the buns buttered-side up on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven until golden.
-
Assemble your burgers. Top the burger with tomato slices, onion rounds and lettuce. Then add the top bun to enjoy the crispiest and smokiest burger you've ever had!

How to Make Smash Burgers: Step by Step Pictures
Divide 1 pound of beef into 4 equal portions.
Each portion should be topped with 1/2 teaspoon of frozen butter. Wrap the butter around the meat and form it into a round. The beef balls should be chilled until you're ready to cook. Place a cast iron skillet ungreased on high heat. Switch on the exhaust fan. Open a window.
Sprinkle a 1/4 teaspoon of our Homemade Burger Seasoning on the beef ball and place it into the pan when the skillet is hot.
Use a spatula and mash down to make a patty that is 1/4-1/2 inch thick. After 2 minutes, gently slide the spatula up and down to remove the top. Next, gently work the spatula underneath the patty. This step is important, because the patty may stick to the pan.
Once you've loosened it, flip it over and smash it once more. Top the patty with cheese if you want a cheeseburger. Remove the patty and let it cool on a cooling rack. Cook the patty for another 2 minutes. Then, wipe the pan with a paper-towel and cook the rest of the patties.
Place a rack on the upper third of the oven while the patties are resting. Turn the broiler on. Melt the 2 tablespoons remaining butter and brush the insides of the buns with it.
The buns should be toasted in the oven with the butter side facing up for a couple of minutes, until they are golden. Assemble burgers by adding red onion slices, tomato slices, and lettuce. My friend, top the burger off with the last bun. Enjoy! Do not forget to say, "I cook." As you receive compliments, say "You clean". #Trust

Frequently Asked Questions
What plant helps with infection?
There are plants out there that help fight infections. Some even contain anti-bacterial properties. One of them is mint.
Mint has been used for centuries to treat respiratory infections such as cold symptoms and flu. Mint also supports digestion and relieves gas pains. You may find relief with peppermint tea if you have an upset stomach. Peppermint oil has antibacterial properties, which make it effective against germs.
Peppermint tea contains menthol, beta-carotene, vitamin C, calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium. These nutrients support healthy immune systems and provide energy to keep your body strong.
You can make peppermint tea at home by adding one teaspoon of dried mint leaves to boiling water. Let steep for five minutes and drink hot three times per day.
Or you can buy peppermint tea bags at any grocery store. Simply add two teaspoons of dried mint leaves to a cup of hot water. Steep for 10 minutes and strain. Drink hot three times per day for best results.
What herb is best for healing?
Herbs are a fantastic way to help heal our bodies. Herbal medicine has been used since ancient times and continues to grow today. There are thousands of herbs known to cure various ailments.
Some herbs are excellent for treating colds and flu, while others can treat anxiety, depression, arthritis, cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and more.
There are also herbal remedies for skin care, hair loss, weight loss, sexual health, energy, sleep, digestion, and much more.
The list goes on and on. But one herb stands above them all regarding its ability to heal. That herb is called aloe vera.
Aloe Vera is considered to be the world's most powerful healer. For centuries it has helped people heal themselves naturally without any side effects.
It's incredible how well aloe vera works. It's even better than prescription drugs and surgery.
In addition to its natural healing properties, aloe vera is highly versatile and can be used in almost any area of life, including food, beauty products, and household cleaning supplies.
You may not realize this, but aloe vera contains hundreds of active compounds, which include vitamins A, C, E, B1, B2, B3, B6, folic acid, calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, copper, sulfur, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, chloride, fluoride, iodine, selenium and more.
These nutrients are essential for human body functions such as cell growth, metabolism, immune system support, healthy bones and teeth, healthy blood pressure levels, healthy eyesight, healthy cardiovascular systems, healthy digestive systems, healthy lungs, healthy nervous system, healthy reproductive organs, healthy skin, and healthy libido.
Is eating raw basil good for you?
I'm sure everyone knows that fresh herbs are great for cooking but did you know that you could eat them too? Raw, uncooked herbs are packed full of nutrients and vitamins that we normally have to cook.
They contain more antioxidants than any fruit or vegetable. And they also help our immune systems stay strong and healthy.
The best way to enjoy these delicious little green gems is to eat them raw from the garden. But there's nothing wrong with enjoying them cooked, either. They taste even better when sautéed in olive oil and served alongside pasta or rice.
There are lots of ways to incorporate raw herbs into recipes. Add them to salads, soups, sandwiches, wraps, omelets, stir-fries, and pesto.
Just make sure you wash them well first!
What is the difference between herbs and spices?
Herbs are used for cooking, and spices are used for seasoning.
Herbs have more intense flavors and can be used to cook dishes, while spices can bring out the flavor of foods without altering the taste.
Spices can also be added to food during preparation, such as curry. Spices may be bought individually, or whole packages may be purchased. There are many spices, including black pepper, cayenne pepper, cinnamon, cloves, coriander, garlic, ginger, nutmeg, oregano, paprika, parsley, rosemary, sage, salt, thyme, turmeric, vanilla extract, etc.
The best way to ensure that you are selecting the right spice for your dish is to read the label carefully. If there is an ingredient list, look for "spice" among the ingredients. A common mistake cooks make is buying too much of a particular spice because they do not realize how little they need.
There are a few basic rules to follow when choosing which herb or spice to use. For example, most herbs are fresh, whereas spices tend to last longer. Also, herbs are generally found in small quantities, while spices come in larger containers. Finally, most herbs are usually sold loose (or ground), while spices are packaged in jars or cans.
As long as you are careful to select the correct herbs or spices, you will find that adding them to recipes makes preparing meals easier. After all, spices add flavor to various dishes, while herbs can help improve the appearance and aroma of food.
How do you make medicinal herbs?
There are many different methods to make herbs into medicinal products. The most common method is to dry the herbs in a warm, dark location before grinding them into a powder or extracting their essential oils. This can be accomplished by hanging herbs upside down in bunches, laying herbs on a drying screen, or using a food dehydrator.
Once dried and ground, herbs can be stored in airtight containers for future use. Other herbs may require special preparation, such as infusing herbs into oil or vinegar, making tinctures with alcohol, or distilling herbs to create essential oils.
Learning the correct techniques for preparing herbs can help ensure that they retain their medicinal properties and potency for optimal health benefits. Using fresh herbs is usually best, but herbs can also be grown in a pot or garden and harvested when they are mature. Herbs can be purchased at health food stores, online retailers, and specialty shops.
No matter where herbs come from, the preparation techniques remain the same; drying herbs in a warm location followed by grinding or extracting the essential oils. You can make your medicinal herbs with the right herbs and preparation techniques.
When making herbal preparations, it is essential to remember that herbs can vary in potency, so always dilute herbs before use or follow the directions on any product label. Additionally, herbs are best used fresh, as many of their beneficial components degrade over time.
Following safety guidelines and paying attention to the potency of herbs can help ensure that you get the most benefit from your herbs. With a bit of practice and preparation, anyone can make therapeutic herbs with medicinal properties. Remember that herbs should never replace any medical advice or treatments prescribed by a doctor. Always consult a licensed healthcare professional before using herbs medicinally.

How To
How to Use Herbs and Spices in Cooking?
Herbs and spices are a great way to add flavor without adding calories. If you've been cooking for years, you already know how easy it is to make even bland foods taste delicious. Try these tips to add more flair to your dishes.
Herbs and spices are essential ingredients in any kitchen. In addition to making food taste better, they also help keep food fresh longer. From enhancing the flavors of soups and sauces to infusing drinks with exotic tastes, herbs and spices go far beyond traditional cooking.
The most important thing to remember when using herbs and spices is to use them sparingly. Even though they may seem like powerful ingredients, they have a strong scent. So, sprinkle them on top instead of piling them onto a dish.
You'll find that the best herbs and spices come in small containers. This makes them easier to measure out, so there won't be any waste. Plus, you'll save money because you won't have to buy large amounts.
Another tip is to avoid placing herbs and spices directly on hot pans. Heat will quickly dry out the herbs and spices, leaving a bitter aftertaste. Instead, place them on paper towels to absorb excess moisture.
Use herbs and spices liberally in recipes where they naturally complement each other. For example, cinnamon pairs well with apples, while garlic complements tomatoes. Once you learn how to combine flavors, you'll be able to create your signature dishes.
Try experimenting with different herbs and spices to spice up meals. For instance, mix thyme, rosemary, oregano, and basil in a bowl. Add salt and pepper to taste. Then toss the mixture with pasta, chicken, or fish.
After the meal, store leftover herbs and spices in airtight jars. This will prevent them from drying out. Also, wrap unused herbs and spices tightly in plastic wrap. They should stay fresh for at least three months.
If you're looking for ways to improve your diet, consider trying new herbs and spices. You can experiment with different blends until you discover your favorite combination. The possibilities are endless!
